In the second semester the northeast of brazil is home to the ‘harvest of the winds’, when wind conditions are strong and constant. This September, the energy generated in one day was enough to supply the entire Northeast.
The Brazilian Northeast recorded a record of wind power generation at the end of September, the month when the winds in the region are strongest and most frequent and is called the “wind harvest” by the industry in the sector. Wind energy is already the second source of energy in Brazil, behind only hydroelectric plants.
The energy produced only on September 30th was enough to supply the entire region and still have a little left.
According to the energy coordinator of the Federation of Industries of Ceará, Joaquim Rolim, historically, the Northeast has always been an energy importing region.
“And as wind generation has been growing year by year, the Northeast has been able to be an energy exporter at various times of the day, monthly. So, the energy that for the Northeast is normally an input, becomes an economic vector.”
Wind farms
Brazil has 653 wind farms, 82% of which are in the Northeast, where natural conditions are more favorable for the production of this type of energy.
Ceará is the third largest state for wind production, with 2,179MW. First is Rio Grande do Norte (4,672 MW), followed by Bahia (4,372 MW). Outside the Region, comes Rio Grande do Sul, with 1,835 MW, which occupies the 5th position in the national ranking, and Santa Catarina, in 8th.
The growth of energy production should continue in the coming years, believes the president of ABEEólica, Elbia Gannoum. “This growth over the past ten years will continue for the next ten years. So, it is the fastest growing source in the country, it is the most competitive source and it generates jobs, income and economic development”, he adds.
